Pac-12 Student Athletes Against COVID-19

Researching COVID-19 disease prediction with Pac-12 student athletes and Fitbit wearable devices

Studying COVID-19 Prediction

Research teams at Stanford and Fitbit have shown that wearable fitness tracking devices have the potential to predict infectious diseases like COVID-19 before symptoms start.

To improve prediction technology academic researchers at Stanford, commercial researchers at Fitbit, and the Pac-12 athletic conference are joining forces to provide donated Fitbit smartwatches to 1,000 Pac-12 student athletes.

The combination of regular COVID-19 testing during the sports season and wearable data shared by these athletes will help research teams better understand how a younger, more diverse, and highly active population is responding to the virus.

Who is Involved

The study is recruiting individuals on a first-come-first served basis [depending on your sport] who meet the following eligibility criteria:

Student-athlete in the Pac-12 conference

18 years or older

Play a sport receiving regular COVID-19 testing in the next six months

If you meet these criteria and would like to participate please contact stanford_covid19_wearables@stanford.edu to find out if you are eligible.

F.A.Q. for Participants

How can I participate?

If you are an athlete over 18 years old in the Pac-12 conference and will be playing a sport active in the next six months, please contact: stanford_covid19_wearables@stanford.edu

What will the study involve?
  1. Registering with Stanford and Fitbit, and completing a brief background survey.
  2. Receiving a free Fitbit Sense smartwatch by mail, which you will be asked to wear for six months. You can keep the smartwatch after the study ends.
  3. Complete weekly check-in surveys.
How can I be the most helpful for fighting COVID-19?
  • Please wear the smartwatch snugly around your wrist, but not uncomfortably tight.
  • Please keep the smartwatch charged and wear it as much as possible, but especially while you sleep at night! See Fitbit’s wear & care guidelines for more info.
  • You do not need to wear the smartwatch during athletic training if you desire.
  • Complete the weekly check-in surveys you receive by email whenever possible.
What if the smartwatch breaks or is lost?

The smartwatch is yours to keep, but if anything happens please let us know as we may be able to help: stanford_covid19_wearables@stanford.edu
